La Guancha
La Guancha Crafts Workshop
A crafts centre and workshop where visitors can admire outstanding examples of traditional Canary Island pottery, while watching local potters at work. Access to the building is gained through a beautifully carved door that depicts traditional scenes of life in the town.
La Guancha Crafts Workshop was set up in 1987, as a result of the town’s highly successful Craft Fair.
Located at number 4, Avenida Hipólito Sinforiano—opening times from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 to 6 p.m.—it contains an assortment of rooms where artisans produce and exhibit pottery, raffia, basketry, openwork, textiles, embroidery, traditional costumes, street clothes and carnival costumes.
Teaching is also an important feature of the workshop, which offers beginners’ and advanced courses in artisanal techniques. The centre has held numerous courses, including Recuperating the Weaver’s Trade.
Thanks to this workshop, several looms were recovered (now the property of the local corporation) and were used to teach course participants. Since then, the number of activities at the centre has increased considerably as students continue to attend all kinds of craft courses.
For those who enjoy discovering local traditions and crafts, La Guancha Crafts Workshop is well worth a visit.
