Every 20 January the feast day of St Sebastian gathers the country folk and stockbreeders of Tenerife who profess great devotion to their patron saint and in particular to the image at the chapel on Adeje shore.
Thousands of pilgrims converge on the area of La Enramada, Adeje, to celebrate the feast day of St Sebastian. People and animals flock from all over the island to accompany the saint on his traditional procession to the sea.
The event congregates dozens of riders who lead their horses into the water as part of a ritual, closely watched by thousands of onlookers.
Celebrations continue after the procession with splendid festivities in the area of La Enramada, with roadside eateries laying on traditional dishes and good local wines, to the accompaniment of parrandas or folk groups.
The most important feast day is 20 January, though celebrations commence the evening before with a mass, a procession escorted by Adeje town band, a firework display and band concert.
The first appearance of Our Lady of the Incarnation, the devotional patron saint of Adeje, was recorded at La Enramada and the first chapel was built in south Tenerife. The country folk and stockbreeders of Tenerife profess great devotion to their patron saint, St Sebastian, and in particular to the image at the chapel on Adeje shore.
The image is thought to have performed numerous miracles and cures and is visited by many country people laden with peculiar offerings. People of all ages also come, some in the hope of making a swift recovery and others to make a request or keep a promise.
The festivities held in La Enramada are also the perfect occasion for the large resident community of islanders from La Gomera to get together. In addition to St Sebastian, patron saint of the capital of La Gomera, the old chapel also houses an exact replica of the patron saint of the island of La Gomera, Our Lady of Guadalupe.
