Since ancient times, the original inhabitants of the Canary Islands celebrated the Sun Festival, coinciding with the summer solstice. The state of the sea or the blooming of the dragon tree were indications of what the new year would be like and the best time to release the male goats with the herds. The grain had already been harvested by then and everything was ready for life to renew and continue.

June 22nd
Enrame de los chorros - Decorating The Fountains
The custom is for the local people living near a fountain to decorate it with flowers, green fruit and vegetables on the Eve of San Juan or early in the morning of San Juan.

June 23rd
Playa del Castillo and Playa de Punta Brava, bonfires and fireworks.

June 24th
Baño de las cabras en el mar - Bathing the goats in the sea
This is one of the most interesting and curious of the San Juan traditions. It has survived to this day in Puerto de la Cruz. It used to be held before sunrise, the moment also chosen for other customs, such as people taking a dip in the sea, splashing houses and their rooms with “holy” water collected at dusk the evening before. This ceremony is now held on the fishing wharf on the morning of the 24th of June, from 8.00 am.
