General Information- Public Health
Holiday travel insurance generally covers the cost of a visit by a private doctor.
On the other hand, hospitals and private clinics usually have agreements with private medical insurance companies.
People from the European Union, Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland, which are part of the European Economic Zone, are entitled to immediate health care if they suffer an unexpected illness or an accident, provided they can show they are entitled to national health care in their countries of origin, by showing an E-111 form (Vital Emergencies) or an E-112 (Chronic Sickness)
Before setting out, you should obtain these forms. In general, everyone in employment, pensioners and their families are entitled to these forms.
European Health Insurance Card
As from 1st June 2004, forms for temporary residence (E-111 and E-128) have been replaced by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
This card is personal and intransferable and certifies the holder’s right to receive health care deemed necessary from a medical perspective while temporarily resident in any of the member states of the European Union (Austria, Belgium, Cypress, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Low Countries, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom), the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechenstein and Norway) and Switzerland, bearing in mind the nature of the healthcare and the planned duration of residence. The validity period is stipulated on the EHIC.
Healthcare will be provided in the same conditions as for residents in the country you are visiting.
The EHIC is not valid for travel to another member state specifically to receive medical care.
