Commerce and Industry

Commerce plays an important role in the economy of Tenerife, accounting for more than 16.60% of GDP. The Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife enjoys an excellent geographic position, protected from the prevailing N.E. trade winds. It offers state of the art services to fleets of vessels crossing the Atlantic and are in need of provisions.

The island and distance factors are serious obstacles for a suitable development of the industrial sector in the Canary Islands.

The Regional Government and the Cabildo, together with local businessmen are co-ordinating their efforts to call for greater advantages. They have drawn up joint formulae enabling them to increase their scant contribution to GDP (a mere 9.8%).
