Los Remedios Altarpiece
The Santa Iglesia Cathedral holds some significant gems of Flemish, Genovese and Spanish art. The great Los Remedios Baroque altarpiece, dating from the first half of the 18th century, contains a splendid set of seven paintings (oils on wood), attributed to the brushes of Van Dyck´s maestro Hendrick van Balen, according to Matías Díaz Padrón, curator of Flemish painting in the El Prado Museum. These icons belonged to the old Mazuelos Altarpiece, ordered from Flanders by Pedro Afonso Mazuelos in 1597. The aforementioned Flemish painter was born in Antwerp in 1575, where he died in 1632.
