The Hijuela del Botánico (or auxiliary botanical gardens) is a romantic garden of 4,000 square metres, created in 1788 on the initiative of the VI Marquis de Villanueva del Prado, Alfonso de Nava y Grimón, whose idea was to make it an auxiliary facility to the La Orotava Acclimatisation Gardens (now the Puerto de la Cruz Botanical Gardens).
There is a network of paths that give visitors the chance to enjoy more than one hundred species planted there, including Indian chestnuts, the fire tree, the zapote, Australian conifers and a lovely specimen of dragon tree.
