Sculpture in memory of Telesforo Bravo
The acts in memory of the centenary of the birth of Telesforo Bravo (1913-2013) culminated in 2014 with the discovery of a sculpture in his memory in the Teide National Park, specifically next to the Cañada Blanca visitor´s center at the Parador Nacional de Turismo, modernist work by Canarian artist Luis Alonso. The three municipalities of Valle de La Orotava - Puerto de la Cruz, Los Realejos and La Orotava - and the Cabildo de Tenerife have collaborated in this project.
Telesforo Bravo Expósito (Puerto de la Cruz 1913-2002): He has been one of the main Canarian scientists, both in the investigative aspect and in the educational and informative aspect. He received his doctorate in Geology from the Complutense University of Madrid and obtained the Extraordinary Prize with his thesis.
The sculpture, like a wind rose, represents the silhouette of Telesforo Bravo. Each of the steel plates is 12 mm thick, and measures 2.60 meters high by 1.80 meters wide. Die cut text: Telesforo Bravo 1913-2013. At the intersection of the plates at the height of the head is a volcanic bomb that represents the brain: the knowledge that he spread to the world. The work is on an 80 cm base lined with red stone from La Gomera (from the Garajonay National Park, also a World Heritage Site). The base plate says: Centenary of the Birth of Telesforo Bravo. Author: Luis Alonso. Villa de la Orotava, on October 25, 2014.
