The Eduardo Westerdahl Museum of Contemporary Art (MACEW), dependent on the Instituto de Estudios Hispánicos de Canarias (Canary Island Institute of Hispanic Studies), opened on 28th June 2007, houses valuable works by important artists including Juan Ismael, Óscar Domínguez, Karl Drerup, Will Faber and Carla Prina.
The collection is divided into four large sections. The first is dedicated to surrealism, the second to international art from 1935-1964, the third to post-war Spanish art and the fourth to the Canaries in the 1950s and ‘60s, LADAC (the Archers of Contemporary Art) and Nuestro Arte. This modest yet prominent museum, re-established in Puerto de la Cruz after an absence of 40 years, was a pioneer in the history of contemporary Spanish art. The works on display are representative of the main artistic trends of the twentieth century.
MUSEUM OF SACRED ART
Parish Nuestra Señora de la Peña
Church Sq.
Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm and from 4 pm to 6 pm
Contribution: 2 €
The parish museum of sacred art Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia shows the history, worship and devotions of the principal church of Puerto de la Cruz since it was founded as a simple chapel in the early 17th century. The temple history and heritage that contains now, is the same of the people who have been living around it.
That parish community obtains his autonomy in 1681, and this circumstance enabled the construction of the present building in the following years, so that it would not be enshrined as such until August the 15th 1697. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries it was enriched by a splendid assembly of altarpieces, sculptures, ornaments, paintings and silver jewelry. These works configure the most remarkable displays showing in the
museum and the church.
As a reflection of cosmopolitanism that conditioned the existence of Puerto de la Cruz from its earliest origins, the parish of Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia - and ultimately, the museum that you are about to visit-, brings you the best of what
was used in last for divine worship. It also demonstrates the openness of the society and the arts of the archipelago in recent centuries, showing excellent pieces of local artists, other acquired in various Peninsula cities by different means, rich jewels that
grateful “parishioners” sent from the New World as offering and, especially, jewels of foreign bourgeois acquired in various Europe places.
