Orotava, La
Villa de Orotava is set in a fertile valley of banana plantations of the same name.
This old town stands out for its magnificent architectural monuments, its stately air and for the personality of its shady Canary Island patios, squares, and historic mansions. The old town centre, which has been declared a national historic and artistic monument, is well worth a long visit.
The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción is also a national monument. The Casas de los Balcones are a gem of traditional island architecture. They house the Carpet Museum and the Eladia Machado Handicraft Centre.
The Orotava hills are criss-crossed by a network of tourist trails, enabling tourists to choose one of many different excursions, some of which take you to the Teide National Park (protected area).
The town also has an introduction and acclimatisation gardens - part of the Botanical Gardens - with about 100 different species, mostly tropical and sub-tropical species from Central and South America, Africa and Australia.
The Victoria Gardens are in the centre of town. This is a recreation park with broad paths, a wide variety of trees and flowers and its famous Lyon Marble Mausoleum, built by French architect Adolph Coquet in 1882.
We recommend a visit to any one of our three beautiful, black sand beaches; Bollullo, Martín Alonso and Ancón; as they are rarely crowded.
