Arico
A large section of the borough falls within the boundaries of the Corona Forestal Nature Park. It is an area that is a fine example of pine forests. The protected area includes the Siete Fuentes volcano, the first of three volcanic centres that emerged in the central part of Tenerife between 1704 and 1705. In a mere five days, a 37 metre-high volcanic cone emerged, with a lava flow that extended 1200 metres. Barranco del Rio is a different sector. It is a long deep channel that runs down from Degollada de Guajara on the ridge of Las Cañadas.
Other protected areas include Salto de las Hiedras waterfall, Montaña Centinela and, down on the coast, the Tabaibal del Porís, the largest community of sweet spurge in the south of Tenerife. There is a recreation area at Contador.
